Matthew’s Place offers Alzheimer’s awareness workshop

Tuesday, June 18, 2013 — Matthew’s Place, a supportive housing community in Albemarle, will host a special event at 11 a.m. June 21 to educate and promote awareness for Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. Everyone’s brain changes as it ages. Serious memory loss, confusion and other major changes in the way the mind works may be a sign that brain cells are failing.

In partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, Matthew’s Place will offer an opportunity for the community to come out and participate in fun activities that will help strengthen brain activity.

Researchers say they have  found a link between “brain-stimulating activities” and levels of protein thought to cause Alzheimer’s disease.

Studies have found that people who did more reading, writing and game-playing over the course of their lifetime may have lower chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Game playing can be anything that stimulates the brain — whether it is a game of Sudoku, a crossword puzzle or bingo.

Matthew’s Place will offer a variety of games and socializing activities during the Alzheimer’s Awareness event.

To register contact Kandi Alexander  at kalexander@uchas.org or call (704) 986-4609.

Matthew’s Place is a senior supportive housing community at 411 S. Fourth St., in Albemarle and is a ministry of United Church Homes & Services, a not-for-profit organization that provides housing and supportive services to over 1,200 individuals in North Carolina and Virginia.
