Facts about farming

Monday, September 24, 2012 — The Stanly County Farmers Market provides the local community with the freshest locally grown meats, fruits, vegetables, herbs, ornamental plants, and flowers available. Shopping the local market offers you an opportunity to provide healthy, beneficial foods to your family. It also supports the local agricultural economy.

Do you know how many farms there are in the U. S. today? According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) there are 2.1 million. For every dollar you spend on food at the supermarket, how much returns to the farmer? Answer: 14 cents.

Farmers Markets are located throughout the U.S.; there are some 7,800 markets nationwide. From 2010 to mid-2011 there was a 17 percent increase in the number of markets in the U.S.

Much of this increase is due to the fact that people are more interested in knowing where their food comes from, who grows their food, and how their food is grown. The number of markets for locally grown foods only continues to increase, and many locations now have winter markets in addition to the traditional season markets.

Stanly County is fortunate to have several local markets, and Market Station in Downtown Albemarle is home to the Stanly County Farmers Market. Throughout the market season (mid-April-October), the community comes together to share local harvests of fresh produce in addition to plants and artisan creations. Shopping at the market not only lets you know your farmer but also the source of the food that you share with family and friends.

America has created a movement to “Raise a Healthier Generation of Kids.” It is known as Let’s Move, and it focuses on eating healthy and getting active. Parents and caregivers make critical choices for kids; those choices include healthy foods and activities.

Our homes, schools, and communities all influence the eating habits of our nation’s children. Home gardens, community gardens, and local farmers markets all support healthier communities and increased quality of life. Healthier eating habits will lead our children to healthier lives!

Shopping locally creates local jobs. Products available at the Stanly County Farmers Market are grown and/or produced within a 100 mile radius of Stanly County or they are a “Got To Be NC” Certified product. Shop local and eat fresh.
