Town supports Clean Water Management Trust Fund

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 — Oakboro’s Town Council met for its last regularly scheduled meeting on Monday.

A resolution to support the 2012-2015 funding for the Clean Water Management Trust Fund was brought before the council.

The Clean Water Management Trust is a non-regulatory program established to help meet infrastructure needs of municipalities and counties, restore degraded surface water, protect watersheds, increase recreational opportunities and enhance the quality of life in North Carolina.

However, funding for the trust has been reduced by 78 percent since 2010, leaving 88 percent of 2012’s critical local needs unmet.

The resolution states that, if signed, municipalities show support of the Clean Water Management Trust Fund and that this fund receives an increase in recurring funding from the governor and the North Carolina General Assembly.

Oakboro Council signed the resolution, indicating its support of this fund and its cause.

The council discussed making changes to Town Ordinance 74.04, which allows for golf carts and other such vehicles to be driven on the roads of Oakboro for a registration fee.

In the past the fee was only $10, but the council voted to raise that cost to $20 on Monday. The changes will become effective immediately.

In other news, Larry Branch updated the council on the status of the park.

“Our disc golf course is under construction. We will start construction on the bathrooms at the beginning of the year,” Branch said.

Branch also updated the council on the status of the inflow and infiltration project under the town’s sewer division.

“It’s under construction,” Branch said with a laugh.

The next town council meeting will be Jan. 22, owing to the fact that Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on third Monday of the month, the regular meeting day.
