Tuesday, May 6, 2014 — Albemarle City Council will consider approving a no parking zone on Commerce Street at Monday night’s meeting.

The proposal comes on the heels of complaints from business owners that overflow parking from the DMV tag agency is both hampering their businesses and causing a saftey hazard.

The proposed no parking area would extend from N.C. Highway 24-27 to the driveway of the DMV tag agency on the west side of the street. No parking would extend from the highway to 25 feet past the last business’ driveway on the east side of the street.

The Council will also consider a request from resident to lower the speed limit to 25 mph at Greenwood Park Drive, where the majority of property owners have already signed a petition in support of the request.

If property owners wish to see the process through, there are a number of steps left to complete; council will discuss if and how residents can move forward with the issue at that time.

Albemarle Downtown Development Corporation Director Shannon Johnson will also speak in favor of new Main Street Solutions funding initiatives at the meeting and a presentation on the proposed 2014-2015 fiscal year budget may be given as well.
