Developers plan $8.7M apartment complex

Plan calls for 64 units built near Walmart

Thursday, February 6, 2014 — An $8.7 million apartment complex may soon be erected behind the Walmart in Albemarle.

Douglas Development, LLC and Halcon Companies, LLC announced intentions to build 64 units of housing behind the superstore last week.

No date has yet been set for the start of construction.

Preliminary plans for the Autumn Woods complex depict four buildings of 16 units each.

“The development will look like a townhome community with each apartment having it’s own separate entrance,” Traci Dusenbury, with Halcon Companies, LLC, said.

One, two and three-bedroom apartments will be available, with prices ranging from $441-$594 per month.

“We believe the location is excellent,” Dusenbury said.

“Future residents will love being able to walk to the Super Walmart and the other stores and restaurants located in the shopping center.”

While the property is not within Albemarle’s city limits, both the city and developers agree that they would like to see it incorporated.

However, before it will consider annexing the property, the city stipulated that developers must extend Leonard Avenue past their planned parking and construct the road according to city standards.

More strict than the county rural standards the property currently falls under, this would require the developer to put in sidewalks, curbs and gutters and adhere to Albemarle’s traffic regulations.

Douglas and Halcon have not expressed objections.

While the existing portion of Leonard Avenue is a four-lane road, the city agreed to let the developers continue it as a two-lane road. In turn the developers will give the city a four-lane right-of-way in case they wish to expand it in the future.

The city has determined that the land is suitable for gravity sewer.

“We look forward to working with the developers in the future,” Mayor Ronnie Michael said.
