Mayor saw 2012 as year for growth

Monday, January 7, 2013 — New London Mayor Calvin Gaddy saw 2012 as a year for growth.

The town’s compliance with the new rezoning ordinances means positive steps in the right direction as the town seeks to meet the demands of new businesses that are attracted to the area.

“We actually redid our rezoning ordinance at the same time we rezoned some of the land,” Gaddy said.

“We held both public meetings and there was not really any opposition on any of it. It’s a major step in getting ready for the future.”

And the best part is, taxes won’t go up any because of this.

“We had real good crowds that came out a the public hearings,” Gaddy said.

“Some came and saw the plans and were satisfied prior to the meetings.

“It was probably our biggest issue, and people asked how it would affect our taxes and no it won’t. New London has been at the same tax rate for 30 years. The county is in the process of reevaluating, and that might cost.”

While other areas of Stanly County have issues to deal with, Gaddy says he sees good things ahead otherwise for New London.

“It’s been business as usual,” Gaddy said.

“We’ve had a good year and everything went fine.

“There’s always going to be issues coming up, but we don’t foresee any of those at this point.”
