School board filing set to begin

Soil & Water nears end

Sunday, July 8, 2014 — Those interested in running for the Board of Education can file for office Monday.

Noon Monday marks the earliest candidates can file for office at the Stanly County Board of Elections at the Stanly Commons. Filing period for school board runs through noon July 25. The filing fee is $27, or 1 percent of the annual salary.

Although four terms are expiring, there will be only two seats available for election: one for District 1 and one at-large, both four-year terms.

The current board members with expiring terms include: Melvin Poole, Jeff Chance (chairman), Vicky Watson and Todd Swaringen. Swaringen filled the unexpired term earlier this year after the resignation of Grant Allen; therefore, the seat is required to expire in the next election cycle.

It will not be until after the 2016 election that the new districts determined by recent legislation for school board take shape, according to Kimberly Wilson, Board of Elections director.

Noon Monday is also the deadline to file for Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor. Those interested will have only a few remaining hours after the Board of Elections office opens after the holiday weekend.

Two four-year seats are available for Soil & Water. The seats of Curtis Furr and Terry L. Blalock are expiring. Both have already filed to seek re-election.

Another seat, occupied by Dickie Clayton, is also set to expire. However, it’s an appointed post.

Filing fee for Soil & Water is $5.
