The Naked Pig Meat Co. opens in Oakboro

By Justin Jones, Staff Writer

Thursday, May 2, 2013 — The Hatley family in Oakboro prefers their pigs to be naked.

Shawn and Jenny Hatley, owners of The Naked Pig Meat Co., have opened up a retail store of pig-based meats to share their affection of “naked meats” with the county.

“We are The Naked Pig because our pork is raised without anything added. You get delicious, unadulterated pork,” Jenny said.

“It’s the truest quality of meat. That’s the definition of naked.”

Their meats feature no nitrates or nitrites, no artificial ingredients or MSG, without hormones or antibiotics and are gluten free.

Shawn said that while many farmers want to get the heaviest pigs for selling, their vision is on the emphasis of meat quality.

“If it’s not going to be fed to our family, we won’t sell it to yours,” said Shawn, who is a fourth generation farmer.

Having a successful farm and establishing The Naked Pig Meat Co. has allowed their pork products to be enjoyed anywhere within the country.

Through their website, customers can select from a variety of roasts, sausages and bacons.

The meat comes flash frozen at the peak of freshness, and is said to remain fresh after six months in the freezer.

But before the opening of their store in downtown Oakboro, their meats weren’t readily available locally.

Customers now have the option of stopping by their store at 129 S. Main St. toward the end of downtown Oakboro to buy meat from a local, trusted source.

“That’s big. It’s trusting what’s in your food and how it’s raised,” Shawn said.

Because of that, Shawn said they won’t be as cheap as the meats one could find at their local grocery store, but their quality can be trusted.

The Hatleys have worked to be as local as possible in their business. In addition to their pigs being raised locally, their feed is also local, coming from the Oakboro Feed Mill.

Even the shirts they wear in the store were screen printed in Oakboro.

Their store is open every Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Their website is available at
