Second-time parents have options

Monday, May 20, 2013 — One of the statistically fastest growing groups in the United States is grandparents and others raising children the second time around.

Young parents either cannot or choose not to raise their children and the unenviable task often falls on grandparents or other caregivers.

In Stanly County there is help.  For the second consecutive year Second Parenthood, under the supervision of Kathy Yow of Stanly County Family YMCA, and Mary Trout-man, of the Family Care-givers Support Program, offered lunch and available resources for these second-time parents.

The luncheon took place Tuesday at the Stanly County Senior Center and was well-attended.

“We have over 50 in our group and there are so many more (second-time parents) out there,” Yow said.

Many second-time caregivers may not know there are resources to help and support them in their trials, according to Yow. Many caregivers become second-time parents either because of drug use, prison sentences, neglect or deaths, sources said.

“If we can just get them in the door, they will stay because they realize they are not alone,” Yow said.

Several local agencies and organizations had booths and were available for disseminating information and offering counsel.

“Stanly County has many resources for second time parents,” Troutman said.

She went on to explain some of the services offered. The participating agencies and organizations were: The YMCA, the Department of Social Services, Senior Services, Second Parenthood, Stanly County Schools, the Stanly County Health Department, the Stanly County Public Library, Legal Aid and the Stanly County Partnership for Children.

The Senior Services and YMCA have the support and access to resources to provide support and help.
