Stanly County Family YMCA receives gift from Food Lion

Friday, March 1, 2013 — Stanly County Family YMCA has received $2,500 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation to help the Y provide Sunday lunches at the community table throughout 2013.

“In 2012, the Stanly County Family YMCA provided 4,998 meals through the Sunday lunch program at the Community Table in Albemarle,” said Kelley Bigger, director of Family Services.

“Food Lion is a great partner in our effort to feed the hungry. With their support, we can continue serving much needed meals to individuals and families on Sundays and holidays.”

The Sunday lunch program was established four years ago by two Y employees who were looking for ways in which the Y could meet needs within our community.

“Nobody was serving meals on Sunday because everyone was in church,” said Bigger.

“So we at the Y started serving out of the pavilion.  Two years later, we were invited to serve at the Community Table. The rest is history.”

The Y staff works with volunteers from across the county to serve meals to an average of 75-120 individuals each week.

Established in 2001, the Food Lion Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $9 million in grants.
