The UPS Store joins Chamber of Commerce

Sunday, May 5, 2013 — The UPS Store, at 656-5 N.C. 24-27 East, celebrated joining the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce April 26 by snipping a length of large red ribbon. Friends, family, supporters and Chamber representatives joined owners Greg and Paula Dorko for the event.

“One of the most important things they do, they’ve created some jobs,” Chamber Chair Bill Lawhon said.

“I’ve talked about small business before. Small business is the backbone of America. We appreciate you all being job creators, because this county, this state and the United States needs job creators right now.”

“I appreciate everyone coming out,” Greg said.

“Thank you for coming to our UPS Store. We pack and ship, we can ship freight for people and we have a mailbox system available, as well.

“An area we’re hoping to expand on is our print and copying abilities so that owners of small businesses and people around will have the opportunity to come here and get stuff produced and printed.”

He talked about how he and Paula arrived in Stanly County.

While living in Charlotte and working at Phillip Morris in the early 1990s, the Dorkos used to take trips out into the surrounding countryside of the metropolitan area. The couple came across Locust one Saturday while out on one of their leisurely cruises down Albemarle Road.

“We fell in love with the area. We would talk about how we wanted to move there,” Greg said.

“We’ve been living in Oakboro since ’95.

“The whole idea is not to leave Stanly County. When we first moved to Stanly County and we wanted to ship something there was never any place to do it.

“I know about TASS in town, but if you’re living out in Oakboro or Stanfield or something like that, then there’s really not a place to send packages.

“We knew it was something that was lacking in the county. We felt like it was something that could be developed further,” Greg said.

“This is something that we’ve been developing since last summer. There was lots of empty space around here,” he said, referencing the shopping center surrounding the UPS Store.

“Now we’ve got this tax place and a hair salon. It’s good that we’re getting neighbors. The bypass area is growing tremendously.

“I’m happy to see it growing, I’m happy to stay.

“We hope to grow the business.”
