Town Creek Indian Mound State Historic Site provides a great destination for families on the go this summer with its final 2nd Saturdays summer program of 2013 on Saturday.
The theme at Town Creek in Mt. Gilead is “Play in the Clay! Fun Day!”
Visitors are invited to play in a medium that’s as old as dirt. Come see how the Pee Dee culture utilized the clay around them, try your hand at making a small piece of pottery, help us daub the East Lodge walls and witness the role “red earth” plays in building dugout canoes.
Local artists and craftspeople will be on site selling their goods.
“Our hands-on activities, local artisans, craftsmen and women, and real interactions with real people make for a genuinely unique North Carolina experience,” said Site Manager Rich Thompson.
“As many as 45 percent of travelers in North Carolina include culture and heritage when they travel, and that’s definitely the take-away from 2nd Saturdays.”
Sponsored by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, the 2nd Saturdays series takes place at 37 State Historic Sites and museums on the second Saturday of the summer months. Each site has its own stylized theme; and many sites will have artists and/or musicians.
