Council hears concerns on ‘eyesore’

Thursday, August 15, 2013 — It may have taken a bit longer than originally expected, but Badin is on track to remove an eyesore from the town that's been a nuisance for nearly a year.

Badin Town Council members considered remarks from some of the 15 residents in attendance at a public hearing before Tuesday's monthly meeting.

The hearing was called in reference to burned remains of a structure at 64 Willow St., which burned down in November.

Since then, steps have been taken to have the shell of the burned dwelling, which was a total loss, demolished. During last month's regular meeting, the council began taking final actions necessary to have the debris removed.

Residents don’t want to see the burned structure there and some mentioned stray cats taking up residence there, creating a nuisance for nearby residents.

Some roadblocks temporarily slowed code enforcement and the abatement process at the property, primarily in regards ensuring all notices and notice dates were properly placed.

Mayor Jim Harrison said the process is now on "an exact tract to make it happen."

"We got ahead of ourselves, I guess," Harrison said in regards to the council's actions in July to remove the structure.

"This was our first time we've ever had to condemn one that has burned. The lawyer told us to hold off, so that's what we did.

Harrison said the owner of the former dwelling is already taking steps to demolish it. A second public hearing on the topic is scheduled for the next town council meeting, at 6:45 p.m. Sept. 10 in BadinTown Hall. Harrison is hopeful it will be nothing more than a confirmation of the actions taken by the owner.

"I hope the public hearing next month is to say 'thank you.' He's already got a contractor, and I've seen the letter, and the contractor said he was a few weeks behind because of rain and Lord knows, we've had that," Harrison said.
