An inmate at the Albemarle Correctional Institution passed away Thanksgiving morning according to Keith Acree, director of public affairs for the Department of Correction.
Acree verified that Brad Nihart, 57, died at Stanly Regional Medical Center last Thursday morning.
According to Acree, Nihart had been experiencing chest pains that morning, and told the nurses at the Albemarle Correctional Institution of his condition.
“He had been experiencing chest pains and went to see nurses. They assessed him and called EMS and took him to the emergency room, and he was pronounced dead moments later,” Acree said.
The treatment at Albemarle Correctional Institution and Stanly Regional Medical Center led doctors to believe that Nihart had suffered a heart attack.
Nihart was from Wilson County and had been in prison since 2005. He was serving a 15-year sentence for second-degree murder.
