Vera Hatley Samuels, 101, of Stony Gap Road, Albemarle, died at 4:05 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at the Lutheran Home in Albemarle.
She was born Thursday, July 19, 1906, in Stanly County.
She had been employed by Pee Dee Hosiery, Pee Dee, N.C. as a looper.
Vera was educated at Ingram School. She enjoyed fishing and “going,” riding around and especially going to Morrow Mountain, Badin Lake and Midland for strawberry sundaes. She took her first plane ride at the age of 75 when she went to Hawaii to visit family. Cooking Sunday dinner for her family was her joy; homemade biscuits, fried chicken, potatoes, fried okra and squash, was her specialty. She considered hot peppers and hard work as contributing to her good health. Her philosophy was: Don’t let anyone run over you; and boss your own way. Honesty and getting it right was her policy. She lived from the horse and buggy days, to the man on the moon and computer days.
