Edward Lilly


Thursday, January 3, 2013 — Edward Odell Lilly died Dec. 30, 2012. His funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 4, 2013, at Saints Delight Church, Albemarle. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to service. Burial will be at Parkers Grove Cemetery.

On April 1, 1931, William Edgar and Nanni Lilly gave breath to a baby boy, whom they named Edward Odell Lilly. Edward was born the fourth child with four older siblings, Luraine Lilly, Benjamin Lilly, Bernice Moses, Chester Lilly and later, five younger siblings, which were Theodore Lilly, Shirley Foster, Paul Lilly, Pauline Lilly and Philmore Lilly.

“Odell,” whom he was affectionately known as, was educated early in Montgomery County and later at Kingsville. He was active in various sports. He also was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was known to his buddies as “Lightning.”

On March 10, 1957, he married the late Shirley Ann Griffin of New London, N.C. To this union they had six children, Ruby Lilly (Eddie, deceased), Cheryl Lilly (Rodney Turner of Albemarle, N.C., Edward “Chico” Lilly (Bridget) of Lawrenceville, Ga., Elizabeth “Caroline” Lilly of the home, Sammie Dave Lilly of Albemarle, N.C. and Tony Lilly (Ann Steele) of Albemarle, N.C.

Other than children, Odell is survived by 18 grandchildren, nine of whom were reared in the home, 22 great-grandchildren, one of which was reared in the home, Ky´Ale and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Other survivors include one sister, Pauline Lilly of Albemarle, N.C. and two brothers, Paul Lilly of Camden, N.J. and Philmore Lilly of Albemarle, N.C.

He is also survived by three brothers-in-law, Melvin Griffin (Carolyn) of New Haven, Conn., Tommy Griffin of Phoenix, Ariz. and David Griffin (Mary) of Albemarle, N.C. He has two sisters-in-law, Wilma Owens of New London, N.C. and Thelma Ruth Lilly of Oakboro, N.C.

Very special friends include Claude Kirk, Bobby Crump, Billy Boy Christian, Owen Parker, Chuck Horne, Matt Bruton and a wonderful neighbor, Ms. Margie Crump. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
