James Mahlon Bales, age 88, of Albemarle, N.C., died at 6:05 p.m. Monday, April 8, 2013, in Stanly Regional Medical Center, Albemarle.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Central United Methodist Church, Albemarle. Rev. Jim Yow will officiate and entombment will be in Stanly Gardens of Memory with full military graveside rites conducted by the Stanly County DAV Ritual Team.
The family will receive friends at Stanly Funeral Home, Albemarle, from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013. The body will remain at the funeral home until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the hour of the service.
Born February 5, 1925, in Hayesville, N.C., he was the son of the late Clarence Addison and Lura Sullivan Bales.
He was a graduate of North Carolina State University and was a retired Electrical Engineer with Alcoa.
He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Albemarle. He was a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army, Americal Division serving during WWII.
He was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 191 and held other scouting positions for many years. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.
He was also a member of Albemarle Lions Club and a member of Robinsville Masonic Lodge 672, Robinsville, N.C.
Mr. Bales was married to the late Sally Williams Bales who preceded him in death in 2005.
Survivors include three sons, Bruce Sullivan Bales and wife Margaret of San Francisco, Calif, James Williams Bales and wife Elizabeth of Boston, Mass. and Thomas Mark Bales of Albemarle, N.C.; one daughter, Susan Esther Bales of Chapel Hill, N.C.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
