Tuesday, May 6, 2014 — Rachel Lee Haithcock Havnaer, of Mount Gilead, N.C., age 85, died peacefully in her home on May 4, 2014, after a short and valiant battle with cancer.

Rachel remained strong and fiercely independent until the end.

She was born September 3, 1928, in Mount Gilead. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 40 years, Perry Gay Havnaer Jr.; her parents, Archie Carl and Minnie Alda Hunsucker Haithcock; and her sister, Sophia Gordon Haithcock Cox.

She was a graduate of Louisburg College. Upon graduation from college, she married and then embarked upon a career in state and federal government, serving two governors, The U.S. Secretary of Commerce and culminating her career in the Lieutenant Governor’s office.

Her career took her from North Carolina to Washington, D.C. and back to Mount Gilead, all the while finding time to serve as a volunteer at church, with the Girl Scouts and, of course, lending time to the Democrat Party and working on various political campaigns.

Upon her official retirement in 1991, she poured her heart and soul into serving the needs of her family, her church family and friends. She was a Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Mount Gilead and served in a variety of leadership positions.

She is survived by her daughter, Gaye Havnaer Hudson and son-in-law, Colonel William A. Hudson Jr., U.S. Army Retired of Annandale, Va.; and two grandchildren, William A. Hudson III and Rachel Elizabeth Hudson, both students at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss.

The family will receive guests at Edwards Funeral Home, 200 W.
