‘Frank’ Byrd, owner of Mt. Gilead Esso Service, dies at 101


Wednesday, July 24, 2013 — Mr. Thomas Franklin ”Frank” Byrd, 101, of Mt. Gilead, died Saturday morning, July 20, 2013 at Stanly Regional Hospital, Albemarle.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, July 22, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Mt. Gilead. Dr. Roger Thomas officiated and burial followed in Sharon Cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

Mr. Byrd was born June 11, 1912 in Montgomery County. He was a son of the late Thomas Platt and Bertha Mauldin Byrd. He was a graduate of Mt. Gilead High School and a Lifetime Member of First Baptist Church.

Mr. Byrd began his career as a Saw Mill Operator and retired as President of Byrd and Son, Inc. He was also the former owner of Mt. Gilead Esso Service.

He is survived by his wife, Carole Greene Byrd of the home; two sons, James Thomas Byrd and Franklin Wood Byrd both of Mt. Gilead; four daughters, Peggy Byrd Robinson of Laurinburg, Joyce Byrd Russell of Raleigh, Linda Byrd Bridges of Lubbock, Texas and Patsy Byrd Hicks of Troy; one sister, Geraldine Byrd McKinnon of High Point; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.
