Thelma Hatley, 86, of Monroe, who enjoyed gardening, music, died June 30, 2014

Wednesday, July 2, 2014 — Monroe, N.C. – Thelma Lucille Haigler Hatley, 86, of Monroe, N.C., died unexpectedly on Monday, June 30, 2014.

Mrs. Hatley was born July 13, 1927, in Union County, N.C. to James Brice Haigler and Glennie Mae Hyatt Haigler.  

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Everett Edward Hatley of Stanly County.  

Survivors include daughters, Laura Hatley Martin of Monroe and Barbara Lucas (Dr. Jack Lucas) of Charlotte. She loved spending time with her granddaughters, Tiffany Overcash (Chad), Jessica Clark (Elliott), Melissa Martin, Dr. Natalie Lucas Davies (Dr. Stephen Davies), Emily Lucas, and her one grandson, Dr. Matthew Lucas. Her two great-grandsons are Ayden Rhys Clark and Cassius Everett Davies.

She is also survived by her loving sister, Deane Haigler Billingsley and husband Gus Billingsley.  

Mrs. Hatley was a graduate of Unionville High School. She received her B.A. degree in music at Meredith College and earned a master’s degree from Appalachian State University. She taught music in Stanly and Union County schools for many years and served as church organist/pianist since age 12.   

With her late husband she founded and operated Hatley’s Skating Rink for more than 50 years. Her passions were gardening, music and her family.  

Visitation was at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe, on Wednesday, July 2, from 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will take place at her home church, Benton’s Crossroads Baptist in Monroe on at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 3. The Reverends Dr. Chris Baucom and Richard Johnson, along with family friend, Teddy Orr, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made in Mrs. Hatley’s honor to Benton’s Crossroads Baptist Church Music Department, 109 Lawyers Road E., Monroe, NC 28110.
