Robert Culp Wagoner, 89, of Gold Hill, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Salisbury.
Mr. Wagoner was born in Cabarrus County on April 19, 1924, a son of the late Ina Culp Wagoner and Marshall Jones Wagoner. His mother died when he was two years old and he was raised by his stepmother, Elsie Culp Wagoner who married Marshall Jones Wagoner after Ina’s death.
A graduate of Richfield High School, he was a self-employed contractor and a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
Mr. Wagoner was a veteran having served in the United States Coast Guard Merchant Marine during World War II (1943-1945), having received the Merchant Marine Emblem, Atlantic War Zone Bar, Mediterranean – Middle East War Zone Bar and the Combat Bar with Stars. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and being with family.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Fraley Wagoner; brothers, Marshall Jones Wagoner Jr., Ben Wagoner and Wayne Wagoner; and sister, Margaret Wagoner Barrier.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Durand “Randy” Wagoner and wife Sally of Jamestown, Gary Michael Wagoner and wife Starr of Badin and Darryl Wagoner and wife Marielena of Gold Hill; brother, Wallace Daniel Wagoner of Gold Hill; sister Mattie Ellen Russell of Kingsport, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2013, at Powles Funeral Home and will be at the residence the remainder of the time.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church by Rev. John Bryant, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the DAV Stanly County Chapter 12.
Mr. Wagoner was a respected member of the Misenheimer and Gold Hill Community and member and Past President of the Misenheimer Lions Club. He was a devoted family man and valued his time with all his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.
