Ellen W. Russell, of Kingsport, Tenn., a pianist, who loved to travel, died Jan. 28, 2014, at age 87

Thursday, January 30, 2014 — Ellen W. Russell, 87, of Kingsport, Tenn., died peacefully on Tuesday, January 28, 2014.  

She was of the Lutheran faith.  

Born in 1926, Ellen was raised in Stanly County, Richfield, N.C.

She graduated from Richfield High School in 1943 and attended Pfeiffer College in 1944. She studied and played the piano for her church and other churches in the area for various occasions.  

Ellen was a wonderful wife and homemaker for 65 years to the late Carroll E. Russell. They began their life together in 1946 in Raleigh, N.C. Life moved them to Kingsport, Tenn. for Tennessee Eastman, then on to Valhalla, N.Y., with Eastman Kodak for about 10 years before coming back to Kingsport, Tenn.  

In the years following retirement, she was able to travel with her husband to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts frequently, enjoying their golden years.

Together they had four children, the late John Russell, Mark Russell of Beaufort, N.C., Martha (Russell) Farmer (Dan) of Kingsport, Tenn., Robert Russell of Boone, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Lindsey (Russell) Ross, Brittany (Russell) Bouton, Jessica Russell, Preston Russell, Alan Russell, Sara Russell and Anna (Farmer) Buck; and four great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Wellington of Colonial Heights for their compassionate care.

The family received friends from 5-6 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport, Tenn. The service followed at 6 p.m. with the Rev. J.W. Depew officiating.

The graveside service was at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 31, 2014, at Mountain Home National Cemetery.
