Stephen Dukes, 66, of Mt. Pleasant, died Feb. 26, 2014

Stephen Keith Dukes, 66, of Mt. Pleasant, N.C., passed into God’s loving arms on February 26, 2014, four years after being diagnosed with ALS. Steve’s courage and efforts inspired and helped others with ALS and their families.

Steve is the former owner of Carolina Cabinetry, a company that he created and managed for almost 18 years. His work career also included working as a police officer with the Jackson, Miss. Police Department.

He was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, and he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. In his youth he was active in Scouting, achieving Eagle Scout rank.

Steve is survived by his wife, Lynn Butler Dukes; his mother, Gwen Dukes of Clinton, Miss.; his son, Jerry Dukes of Jackson, Miss.; his daughters, Nicolle Dukes Davis of Williamsburg, Va., Courtney Dukes of Tampa, Fla. and Lara Benton Little of Concord, N.C.; his brothers, Stan Bulger of Magee, Miss. and Lee Dukes of Dallas, Texas; his sisters, Jena Dukes McNeece of Clinton, Miss., Jan Dukes Clark of Canton, Miss., Suzette Bulger Arender of Raleigh, Miss., Annette Bulger Mathis of Jackson, Miss. and Nonette Bulger Runnels of Mize, Miss.;  grandchildren, Eliot Davis and Emma Little; and his beloved Schnauzer Jazzy.

He was preceded in death by his father, A.L. Bulger of Mize, Miss. and his stepfather, Dr. T.G. Dukes of Clinton, Miss.

A private memorial service will be on March 15 at 2 p.m. at the family garden, officiated by the Rev. Bruce Gwyn, pastor of the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, where Steve was an active member.

The family offers a special thank you to those who provided care and comfort to Steve and his family, including Jonathan, Jennifer, Pam, Candace, Dora, Kelly, Rebecca, Dr. Pfohl, Dr. Bedlack, Dr. Plittman, the staff at the ALS Clinic at Duke University and the VA Hospital.
