Janet Wirth Pickler, 78, of New London, passed away at 11:10 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2013, at Trinity Place, Albemarle, N.C., after a lengthy battle with ALS.
Her service was at 2 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2013, in Kendalls Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Faggart and Pastor Christian Herring officiating. The family received friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
Born July 31, 1934, in Penn Yan, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John G. Wirth and Ruth Meade Wirth.
She received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Geneseo State University and received a Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from Michigan State University.
Mrs. Pickler was a Professor of Speech at Pfeiffer College for 35 years, retiring in 1996.
She was a member of Kendalls Baptist Church where she taught the Senior Ladies Sunday School class for 30 years.
Mrs. Pickler was a very talented and active person and was the only woman from Stanly County to serve as a State Legislator, serving during the 1970s. For her service to the state of North Carolina, she was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
She served 18 years on the Stanly County Board of Elections, eight years of which she served as Chairman. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and for Stanly County Hospice, where in 2000, she was honored as Volunteer of the Year.
Mrs. Pickler was an avid bridge player with the Stanly County Senior Center and she was also a stained glass craftsman for many years.
Mrs. Pickler is survived by her husband, Eugene Pickler, of the home. Other survivors include daughters, Audrey Barringer of New London, Sara Pickler of Albemarle and Eva Pickler of Johnson City, Tenn.; grandchildren, Rachel Barringer, Garrett Barringer and Christina Barringer; and brother, John E. Wirth and wife Sue of Buffalo, N.Y.
The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Stanly County, 960 N. First St., Albemarle, NC 28001 and Rowan County Hospice & Palliative Care, 720 Grove St., Salisbury, NC 28144.
