Janie (Iona) Lefler Lukowski Rogers, a resident of Newport News, Va. for 17 years, passed away quietly at home on Friday, April 5, 2013; her daughter and son were at her side.
Janie was born in Albemarle, N.C. on February 6, 1925, to the late Jonas Pierce Lefler and Emma Alma Lowder Lefler.
She was a long-time resident of Charlotte, N.C., prior to moving to Newport News, Va.
She was married for 22 years to the late Edward F. Lukowski, who died at the early age of 44. Seven years later, she married the late Albert B. Rogers, a marriage of 20 years before his death.
She was a devoted and loving wife and mother, always putting family first.
She strongly believed in her Christian faith and was intimately involved in all aspects of her church’s endeavors. She was a member of Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church, Newport News, Va. and a life-long member of Commonwealth United Methodist Church, Char-lotte, N.C.
She led a life of unselfish dedication to helping others, treating all she met with compassion, kindness and love. She will be remembered also for her sense of humor, her enthusiasm and her artistic approach to everything she did. Her joy of friendship exhibited itself by organizing the Juliets Red Hat Society. She retired from two careers: a hairdresser for 30 years followed by owning a lumber brokerage business for 20 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Beatrice Lukow-ski Waggener, widow of Thomas E. Waggener of Newport News, Va.; and her son, Edward F. Lukowski and his wife Susan of Lake Wylie, S.C.; her grandson, John Lukowski and his wife Mary and their three children, Gag, Gannon and Graylyn of Irmo, S.C.; her grandson, David Lukowski of Charlotte; her sister, Emma Lefler Morton of Albemarle; and many nieces and nephews.
A service in celebration of her life was at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. William G. Davidson, Senior Pastor.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013, in Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte, N.C., officiated by Rev. Peggy D. Bridgers, Senior Pastor, Commonwealth United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church, 38 Hoopes Road, Newport News, VA 23602. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.
