Mildred Deese

Friday, March 1, 2013 — Mildred Louise Little Deese, 92, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2013, after several years of declining health.

She was born in Albemarle on August 2, 1920, to the late Annie Ruth Bold Little and John Boger Little Sr.

“Mim” was educated in the Albemarle Schools, graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1940 and spent 38 and a half years as a high school French and English teacher, almost exclusively in the Albemarle City Schools.

She was an avid golfer for over 40 years and enjoyed many events as a member of the North Carolina Mountain Seniors Golf Association. She was a skilled bridge player, loved reading, bird watching and the beach. Most of all, she loved her friends and family who were a constant source of joy in her life.

“Mim” loved her church, Central United Methodist, and was a lifelong member there. She served her church in various capacities including being a member of the Administrative Board and the Staff Parish Committee well into her 80s.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Julian Deese; her brothers; John Boger Little Jr. and Martin Franklin “Goon” Little.

She is survived by two daughters; Julie Gillespie and husband Dan of Elkin; and Dr. Ginny Carpenter and husband Matt of High Point.

She is also survived by five grandchildren; Courtney Carpenter Niederer and husband Eric of Albemarle, Hollis Owens and Nick Baker of Huntersville, Sara Gillespie Crawford and husband Tyson of Sylva, Kelly Gillespie Snow and husband Kevin of Elkin and Julie Gillespie Chaney and husband John of Ronda.

Also surviving are two nieces; Lin Little Dupont of Garden, Va. and Dr. Jane Little Eason of Garden City, S.C.; three nephews; John Little and wife Debby of Mauldin, S.C., Marty Little and wife Susan of Maiden and Bobby Lowder and wife Connie of Stoneville.

The love of her life were her precious great-grandchildren Natalie and Ellie Niederer, Evan and Sophie Snow and J.D. Chaney.

A celebration of her life will be at Central United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on March 2, with Rev. Jim Yow and Rev. Clyde Penry officiating. A celebration reception will be held prior to the service in the church Fellowship Hall from 12:30-1:45 p.m. Burial in Fairview Memorial Park will be held following the service.

Stanly Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on March 1.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Herbie Bryan for his many years of dedicated servoce to the care of Mrs. Deese and to Hospice of the Piedmont for their genuine care and concern for her during the last two months of her life.
