Laurence ‘Pat’ Hays

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 — Irmo, S.C. – Laurence Woodley “Pat” Hays ended his battle with brain cancer on Friday, April 19 in his home.

He was born in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on February 20, 1945, to the late L.J. and Helen Henderson Hays.

In 1967, he graduated from the University of Alabama and began his 40-year career as a metallurgical engineer with ALCOA, Inc., which took his family to plants near Maryville, Tenn., Palestine, Texas, Albemarle, N.C. and Charleston, S.C.

Pat’s commitment to his family and community filled his days. Beyond the everyday ways a man is his family’s hero, he was also an Optimist and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club in Albemarle. His initial diagnosis with Glioblastoma Multiforme in 2003 offered little hope of survival, but he proudly walked his survivor lap in Relay for Life nine times.

Pat is survived by his wife of 48 years, Patricia Dameron Hays, whom he loved since they met in junior high; by his brother, Charles Raymond Hays of Hoover, Ala.; by his sons, Laurence Woodley (Larry) Hays II and James Austin (Jim) Hays; and by his grandchildren, Austin Mason Hays and Korianna Henderson Hays, all of Irmo, S.C.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of New Life will be at the Episcopal Church of St. Simon and St. Jude, 1110 Kinley Road, Irmo, S.C. at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, with a reception for all friends and family immediately following in the church’s Field Building.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org or to the Episcopal Church of St. Simon and St. Jude.
