Sunday, January 20, 2013 — Hubert J. Poplin, 82, of New London, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at his home.
The family received friends at Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle on Friday, January 18, 2013, from 6-8 p.m.
At other times the family will meet at his home.
The funeral service was in Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at 2 p.m. Rev. Tony Hopkins and Rev. Frank Thompson officiated and the burial followed in Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery, Albemarle.
Born February 12, 1930, in Stanly County, N.C., he was the son of the late Cecil Earn Poplin and the late Attie Almond Poplin. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Irene Mozelle Bost Poplin in 1994, and a son, James Poplin in 2008.
He is survived by his second wife, Lucille Huneycutt Smith Poplin of the home; sons, David Poplin and Kenneth Poplin, both of New London; daughter, Betty Eury of Oakboro; stepchildren, Nancy Bowers of Richfield, Gail Mason of Albemarle and Terry Lee Smith of New London; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Poplin served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 and was a member of Prospect Baptist Church. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge 348 for over 60 years.
