Charlotte – Mrs. Mitchell, age 81, died Sunday September 8, 2013.
Born on September 11, 1931, she was raised with three siblings in Albemarle, N.C. and taught the value of hard work and straight talk.
That work ethic motivated her to move to the “big” city of Charlotte and pursue a career in nursing. She graduated from The Presbyterian School of Nursing in 1952 and remained at Presbyterian Hospital for the next 41 years. Her career began in the ER as a Supervisor, then ER Director. But new challenges lay ahead of her. She had a vision that changed how patients in Charlotte think of and use hospitals. She spearheaded the development of free standing Ambulatory Service Centers culminating in her overseeing multiple departments and becoming Director of Ambulatory Services at Presbyterian Hospital.
After retiring in 1994, Ruby loved to travel when she had the chance and particularly enjoyed Las Vegas and the beach. She also continued her 30 year, unsuccessful fight to keep squirrels from her bird feeders. Ruby was a lover and spoiler of animals, a “lead foot” driver and a vocal backseat driver.
Ruby was more than a career woman though. She was the loved mother of three children. She helped guide and comfort us in life and will be missed deeply. She was also a loving grandmother of two grandsons.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, William S. Mitchell.
She is survived by her two daughters and son, Ann H. Miltich, Kathleen M. Mitchell and William S. Mitchell Jr.; son-in-law, Dr. Michael F. Miltich; grandsons, Michael D. Miltich and William A. Miltich; and brother, Ben Treece.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, September 13, 2013, at Harry & Bryant Funeral Home Chapel, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, N.C. Relatives and friends were welcome for visitation at Harry & Bryant Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, September 12, 2013.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Humane Society of Charlotte or the Presbyterian Hospital Foundation White Rose Fund.
