Monday, May 12, 2014 — Kate Forrest Swaringen of Albemarle died May 10, 2014, at her residence, Stanly Manor. She was 102.

Mrs. Swaringen was the daughter of the late William James “Buck” Forrest and Mary Ann “Molly” Parker Forrest, members of two of Stanly County’s earliest families. Mrs. Swaringen was the widow of Paris Stanford Swaringen who died in 1984.

She retired after 34 years at American and Efird Mills, where she worked as a winder.

Devoted to her children, she taught them the value of hard work and the importance of education. Her vegetable garden provided a bounty each summer.  She was a skilled seamstress, sewing many of her children’s clothes, and her quilts still are valued by her family and friends today.

Mrs. Swaringen was a member of Stony Hill United Methodist Church in her early years, later joining Parkway United Methodist Church as a charter member. When Parkway United Methodist Church was disbanded, she rejoined Stony Hill United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Swaringen was preceded in death by her brother, Jim D. Forrest, and sister, Willie Forrest Clodfelter.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Swaringen Hughes of Issaquah, Washington, and a son, Lloyd Keith “Buck” Swaringen of Albemarle.  She also is survived by five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Swaringen’s funeral service was held May 13, 2014, at Stony Hill United Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
