Henry Hammill, of Southern Pines, a WWII Navy Veteran, died March 27, 2014


Sunday, March 30, 2014 — Southern Pines, N.C. – Henry Culp Hammill, age 89, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at his home in Southern Pines.

A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Southern Pines United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors followed at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

He was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and entered the U.S. Navy and served as a Petty Officer in the Pacific Theater during WWII.

After the war, he married Dolores Reid in 1953, and moved to Southern Pines in 1961 to open Southern Motor Parts.  

He was a member of the Southern Pines Elks Lodge and a Southern Pines little league baseball coach with 26 straight wins. He was an active member and served on several boards with the Southern Pines United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Reid Hammill; daughters, Kendra H. Knoernschild and husband Kevin of Fuquay Varina, N.C. and Selena H. Shaw of Wake Forest, N.C.; a son, Albert Hammill and wife Virginia of Southern Pines, N.C.; sisters, Helen H. Jenkins and Frances H. Parnell, both of Concord, N.C. and Katrina H. Sells of Richfield, N.C.; grandchildren, Matthew Lang, Jason Knoernschild, Alan Mabe, Meredith Shaw, Alexandra Lang, Carrie Knorenschild, Stephanie Mabe and Jennifer Shaw.

Memorials may be made to Southern Pines United Methodist Church Preservation Fund, 175 Midland Road, Southern Pines, NC 28387.

The family received friends from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines.
