Ernest Whitley, 88, of Albemarle, was a WWII veteran


Tuesday, September 24, 2013 — Ernest Junior Whitley, 88, of Albemarle, N.C., died Saturday, September 21, 2013, at Stanly Regional Medical Center.  

His funeral was at 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 24, 2013, in Stanly Funeral Home Chapel, Albemarle, with Rev. Charles Curtis officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle, with full military rites by the Stanly County DAV. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, September 23, 2013, at Stanly Funeral Home.  

Born April 19, 1925, in Stanly County, he was the son of the late Chalmers Levi Whitley and Esther Fesperman Whitley.  

He was a retired employee of E.J. Snyder. He also enjoyed sandblasting and farming.

Mr. Whitley was a member of Zion United Methodist Church of Gold Hill, N.C.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II in Switzerland, France, Germany, England, Austria, Belgium and Italy. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a member of the V.F.W. of Richfield.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Annabel Perry Whitley, in 2004.  

He is survived by his wife Roxie Eudy Whitley of the home. Survivors also include a son, Perry Whitley and wife Lynette of New London, N.C.; a daughter, Patricia Whitley Matthews and husband David of Lake Norman; three grandchildren, Tina Haywood, Candice Whitley and Brooke Whitley; and three great-grandchildren.

Stanly Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
