Politics can be surprising

With a turnout of nearly 35 percent, the vote is in and Stanly County has spoken.
In winning the NC House 67th District seat, youthful Justin Burr surprised many by defeating both Ken Furr and Dr. Nalin Mehta. With Stanly County in an unprecedented growth mode, the 22-year-old will be the county’s voice and new leadership in Raleigh in these most important days.
In the NC State Senate vote, incumbent Democrat Dr. Bill Purcell, who will be seeking his sixth term in November, will be challenged by Albemarle political newcomer, Janice Abernathy.
Purcell, who was ranked the 10th most effective senator in the state in 2007 in a report by the N.C. Center for Public Policy Research, will be favored to win.
But as Tuesday’s vote proved, no one wins until the votes are counted.
