Time to honor grandparents

By B.J. Drye, Managing Editor

Sunday, August 24, 2008 Grandparents Day is less than a month away. I have recently found myself showing traits similar to my late grandpas.

Both Grandpa Drye and Grandpa McLester were extreme workaholics. I didn’t really want to inherit this trait, but it seems like one that has gotten hold of me. There’s always something waiting in line for me to do. There’s an old saying that goes something like “idle hands are the devil’s tools.” (Unless it’s a Blue Devil’s tools, I better stay active.)

As for my grandpas, they were both loyal to their work.

Grandpa Drye worked farmlands, mostly cotton, at his home in Stanfield. My dad told me that Grandpa began working for $.10 a day.

And I thought my pay was a little off.

I guess it’s through him that I’ve inherited the mass appeal of unusual fruits and vegetables that are brought for my enjoyment during the summers at the SNAP.

But Grandpa McLester gardened a bit as well. He also liked to eat. He enjoyed his ice cream, especially banana – along with some cantaloupe on the side.

Grandpa McLester was loyal to the automobile industry and Ford Motor Company. He worked for Stovall and Wolfe, Jim White Ford and Metrolina Ford before opening up a garage in the Ridgecrest community. He could fix about anything. There are so many times when I find an old antique or something else that needs fixing that I think of how he could repair it in no time, if only he were here.

Both of my grandpas are gone now. One lived to be 88 and one was 69. In addition to memories, I have a few photos that are family treasures. In one, Grandpa McLester is repairing a toy pinball machine for me and in another he’s adjusting the go-cart I received for my birthday. For Grandpa Drye I have a photo of us riding around on his tractor when I was about 4 or 5.

It’s great to sit back and share memories of your relatives. In fact, that’s the point of this week’s column. As with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, The Stanly News & Press is sponsoring a Grandparents Day contest.

We want to read about your memories of Grandma and Grandpa. What was it like to visit their house when you were a child? If you are a child, what do like about Grandma or Grandpa? Why should Grandma and/or Grandpa be named Grandparent(s) of the Year?

A panel of judges will pick the first, second and third place winners through an anonymous selection process. All entries must be of current Stanly County residents. All entries must be at the SNAP by 2 p.m. Sept. 3.

Mail your entry, a photo of Grandma and/or Grandpa, their age, town, your phone number and town and other necessary contact information to Grandparents Contest, The Stanly News & Press, PO Box 488, Albemarle, NC 28002, e-mail to snaponline25@carolina.rr.com, fax to (704) 983-7999 or bring it by the SNAP office, 237 W. North St., Albemarle.

Now the best part. The first place winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to Yadkin Valley Steakhouse, the second place winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to Starnes Jewelers and third place will receive a gift basket from Albemarle Christian Bookstore.

Winning entries will also be published in the Sept. 7 issue of the SNAP.

We know there are some great grandparents in Stanly County and now we want to honor these fine people. Show them you care and nominate them for the SNAP’s Stanly County Grandparents of the Year.
