The West Stanly JV baseball squad claimed the championship this past weekend at the 2012 Spring JV Baseball Classic, hosted by the Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department.
In the first round on Friday, West Stanly advanced to the semifinals of the tournament with a 12-3 win over East Montgomery.
The other game on Friday saw the North Moore Mustangs top North Stanly 6-2, moving right into the finals game with a bye.
On Saturday, the Comets earned a place in the third-place game with a 9-1 win over the Eagles.
West Stanly advanced to face North Moore in the finals with an 11-1 win over Albemarle. The Colts held the Bulldogs to three hits in the victory.
The third place game was on Monday afternoon, where North Stanly topped Albemarle 16-7.
In the championship finals, the Colts got a masterful performance from starting pitcher Caleb Dulin, who allowed no runs on two hits with three walks and 12 strikeouts in a 4-0 win over the Mustangs.
West played small ball against North Moore, stealing six bases and getting two sacrifice bunts and two bunts for singles.
The Colts jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when leadoff hitter Damon Smith tripled and scored on a passed ball. Trey Barbee reached base later in the first on a passed ball and scored on a bunt single by Hunter Martin.
North Moore did not have a base runner reach by a hit until the fourth inning and only had two runners to reach third base.
West added insurance runs in the fifth inning when Dulin was hit by a pitch. His courtesy runner, Eric Huneycutt, stole second and scored on two passed balls. Martin then later scored on a passed ball for the Colts’ final run of the game.
“We really emphasize to our JV players how important this tournament is,” West head coach David Lee said.
“It’s a great atmosphere to get them in big-game situations.”
Lee also talked about the importance of the annual event.
“The JVs are on display here and it’s all about them. It gives them a chance to play in situations with some tension, and it’s a great atmosphere for JV baseball,” Lee said.
For West Stanly, it’s the sixth time that the Colt JVs have won the Easter Classic, having claimed wins in 2004-06, 2009 and the past two seasons.
