Charlotte Muscle Team event raises $300,000 in fight against muscle disease

Thursday, May 23, 2013 — CHARLOTTE, May 22, 2013 — The Muscular Dystrophy Association scored a huge win in the fight against muscular dystrophy at the annual Charlotte Muscle Team event held May 21 by raising more than $300,000 to help Charlotte-area families living with muscle disease.

"The Charlotte community really showed up for this year's event to support MDA families,” said MDA Divisional Director Theresa Miller.

“From the pro athletes and heroes who were partnered with a "Buddy" to make their night extra special, to the business and community leaders who helped sponsor the event, we are grateful to everyone who flexed their muscles to make a difference and help fight muscle disease.”

The event held at Panther’s Den at Bank of America Stadium attracted hundreds of participants, top athletes and local heroes, including military personnel and fire fighters, who were teamed up with an "MDA Buddy" (a local child living with a neuromuscular disease) for the evening.

WWE wrestling legend and longtime friend of MDA Sgt. Slaughter was among some of the pro athletes in attendance at this year's event. The Association also welcomed JD Motorsports NASCAR driver Mike Wallace and Maj. Gen. Chuck Swannack (retired U.S. Army) to the Charlotte Muscle Team.

Guests enjoyed entertainment, meet-and-greets with athletes and heroes, live and silent auctions featuring unique sports memorabilia, as well as a variety of food and beverage stations.

MDA honored Kenneth Beuley, CFO and director of development at the Keith Corporation, with the 2013 Joe Martin Champion of Spirit Award. The annual award is given to high-achieving individuals who are committed to advancing MDA’s lifesaving mission in their community, as well as the Association’s worldwide research efforts seeking better treatments and cures for neuromuscular diseases.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by MDA and to help serve the Charlotte community, including the many families the Association serves,” Beuley said.
