The U.S. National Whitewater Hosts Food Truck Competition and Festival

Friday, August 2, 2013 — CHARLOTTE – On Saturday, August 10, the U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) will host the inaugural Beast Feast, an all-day food truck competition and festival that invites guests to sample food from various local food trucks while enjoying live music performances. The festival will begin with the Amphibious Duathlon, followed by an afternoon of food truck sampling, a Quadzilla Relay Race and live music.

The race portion of the day will kick off at 8 a.m. with the Amphibious Duathlon, a unique race that features two standard 5K trail races surrounding a 2K flatwater paddle. The race will end with awards given to the top three finishers in various age categories. Saturday’s race has reached capacity but those still interested in participating may sign up for an identical race on Sunday morning. Available through August 7, pre-registration is $27 and guarantees a Whitewater Race Series t-shirt. The Quadzilla Relay Race will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening and will feature three individual legs of stand-up paddle boarding, whitewater kayaking and mountain biking, followed by team rafting to the finish line. Guests may sign up as individuals ($20) or teams of 2-3 people ($40).

At 1 p.m., guests are invited to sample food on Belmont Abbey Island. Ten local food trucks will be competing against each other and against the USNWC food truck, which is located at the Pumphouse Biergarten. Sampling tickets will be available for purchase on the island ($5 for four tickets). Food samples will range from the cost of one ticket to the cost of four tickets. There will be live music throughout the sampling from Stooge’s Brass Band, Earphunk, the Lee Boys and headliner Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band. The bands, which bring a mix of funk and bluegrass, will begin at 1 p.m. and will play into the evening.
