Wingate, N.C. – GRITS: The Musical (Girls Raised In The South) returns to The Batte Center at Wingate University this weekend. Based on southern stories in the book by Deborah Ford, Erica McGee, president of McGee Productions, wrote the script and songs for the musical. The musical premiered at Wingate University in 2008.
“These stories really spoke to me because I was born in Savannah, Ga., raised in Knoxville, Tenn., went to the University of Tennessee, married a N.C. man, so I have been in the south my whole life,” said McGee. “A lot of the material was drawn from the book, but is also from my personal experience, my experiences with the GRITS ladies that have influenced my life, which is everything of who I am.”
This family-friendly show includes stories and songs by four actresses on stage. They involve the audience with games and trivia to make the entire performance fun and engaging. “You’re not having to keep up with some sort of story line,” McGee said. “We’re just here telling stories, being the characters that we are and singing songs about the stories.”
The two performances are Friday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at www.battecenter.org or by calling The Batte Center Box Office at 704-233-8300 or CarolinaTix at 704-372-1000.
