EXHIBITIONS



Birth of Coffee – NEW – One of the most popular beverages in the world and a morning staple for many, coffee is a drink that transcends continents and culture. This photographic exhibition, based on a book of words and images, focuses on the people worldwide who grow and produce coffee. The project’s images and prose capture the global stories of the intense and often difficult growing process, illuminating the extraordinary science and the human experience behind the daily cup of coffee. Through January 7. In partnership with S&D Coffee.





Explore More Stuff Lab – October’s theme is Chemistry: It’s elemental! From the strands of hair on your head to the magic behind how cell phones function, chemistry is the science of the reactions that power everyday life. Visitors will paint with crystal ink, use spectroscopy to identify food additives, explore how antioxidants affect reactions, make slimy polymers that mimic the mucus that lines the esophagus and much more. In partnership with CEM.

Explore More Life Lab – October’s theme is Decomposers:  You may reduce, reuse and recycle at home, but Mother Nature is Earth’s ultimate recycler. Delve into how nature’s recycling system works and who’s involved. Creep by our worm bin, learn about soil moisture and observe decomposers you might find in your own backyard  



Special Activity: Dig deep with our resident worm expert and get up close and personal with some of nature’s recyclers. Saturdays in October; 11:00 a.m.



Fossil Day – October 13 

Discover the secrets behind the preserved remains of animals, plants, and other organisms from the past while celebrating National Fossil Day, including the Museum’s own extensive fossil collection. Find out what a living fossil is, excavate your own fossil and make one to take home. All Day.



Explore More Collections Lab –Nature wears some of the most vibrant hues on the planet. Immerse yourself in a world of color with an all-new display of Museum collections and discover the many ways color is found in nature. Many international cultures have even used natural inks and dyes to create colorful art based on environmental observations. Test your ability to decipher nature’s colors at a special mystery station by studying the patterns of natural objects as they appear in black and white photographs.



Special Activity: During the month of October stop in to discover the bizarre and things that go bump in the night. Get a special peek at some of the creepiest, crawliest critters including snakes, millipedes, roaches, beetles and tarantulas. Daily throughout October; 2:00 p.m.



KidScience – KidScience is Discovery Place's early childhood exhibition where young children, ages 0-7, and their caregivers learn about science and math as they experiment, create and play together. October’s theme is Alphabet Science: Learn the letter of the week and explore science wonders from A to Z. Monday–Friday; 11:30 a.m.–noon.





MOVIES



Discovery 3D Theatre – Hold on to your seat and your senses and get ready to experience Discovery 3D Theatre, the Museum’s digital movie experience.  With the help of 3D glasses, movies leap from the screen.  Featured films are 15 – 20 minutes in length, show throughout the day and are free with Museum admission.  Discovery 3D Theatre is currently showing:



Dolphins 3D Tribes of the Ocean

This awe-inspiring underwater documentary by Jean-Michel Costeau takes visitors to the coral reefs of the Bahamas for a close encounter with the surviving dolphin tribes of the ocean.

The Little Prince

Relive the magic of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s endearing story in a fully immersive, spectacular journey as the Little Prince leaps from one fanciful universe to another in search of his beloved Rose, accompanied by his hilarious friend the Fox,. Fly alongside these fearless heroes as they scale instruments on the music planet, wake the friendly stone giant and dodge the metal claws of a ferocious dragon! Through June 1, 2013





The Charlotte Observer IMAX® Dome Theatre – The Charlotte Observer IMAX® Dome Theatre is the largest screen in the Carolinas, spanning five stories high and 80 feet wide.  The unique curvature of the IMAX Dome surrounds movie viewers with 15,000 watts of sound and light, creating the effect of being in the film! Note: There is an additional charge for IMAX films.



Sea Rex: Journey to a Prehistoric World –Through November 25, 2012

Journey to a prehistoric world and experience a wondrous adventure from the dinosaur age in IMAX®. Join Julie, an imaginative young woman, in a voyage through time and space. Explore an amazing underwater universe inhabited by larger-than-life creatures which were ruling the seas before dinosaurs conquered the earth. See science come alive beneath the oceans and get ready for a face-to-face encounter with the T-Rex of the seas.



To The Arctic – Through April 18, 2013

An extraordinary journey to the top of the world, the documentary adventure To The Arctic tells the ultimate tale of survival. Narrated by Oscar® winner Meryl Streep, the film takes audiences on a never-before-experienced journey into the lives of a mother polar bear and her twin seven-month-old cubs as they navigate the changing Arctic wilderness they call home.

October Theme: October is all about wild, wacky and weird activities! Join us for wild games, wacky experiments and weird concoctions.



Daily activities listed below take place from 11:15-11:45 a.m. and 2:15-2:45 p.m.



October 2 – Monster Balloons: Create balloon animals in the shape of your favorite Halloween monster.

October 3 – Slime: What ingredients do we need to make our own slime? Get hands-on with our favorite gooey recipe.

October 4 – Monster Puppets:  Transform your favorite Halloween goblin or ghoul into a puppet.

October 9 – Mad Scientist Potion: Put on your safety goggles and your scientist brain and join us as we mix different ingredients together to make a magic potion.

October 10 – Edible Slime: Slime isn’t only fun to play with! Join us as we add our favorite flavors to slime for a tasty snack.

October 11 – “Go Away Big Green Monster”: Stop by for one of your favorite stories and then make your own monsters in I Can CREATE.

October 16 – Monster Candy: Prepare your fangs to bite into a tasty treat as we make a monster’s favorite sweet.

October 17 – Dry Ice Experiments: It’ll make you shiver! Check out some of our favorite eye-catching dry ice experiments.

October 18 – Melted Aliens: With a little slime and googly eyes, we can make special aliens to take home. Join us for this fun science and art activity.

October 23 – Happy Birthday Discovery Place KIDS!: Discovery Place KIDS is two-years old today. You won’t want to miss this games and activities at this birthday celebration!

October 24 – Spooky Spiders: Let’s get creepy and crawly with our eight-legged friends. Be part of our web while we learn all about spiders through art and science.

October 25 – Eyeball Candy: Did you know eyeballs could taste so sweet? Help us make tasty eyeballs with pretzels and chocolate.

October 30 – National Candy Corn Day: Celebrate the day before Halloween with our favorite Halloween candy and stay for candy corn art and games.

October 31 – Trick or Treat: Happy Halloween! Wear your Halloween costume and enjoy a special treat. Plus, join us for a costume contest as we vote on our favorite Discovery Place KIDS staff member costume.

Fun Fridays

Join us each Friday for fun, themed activities throughout the Museum that last all day. Fun Fridays at Discovery Place KIDS during September  include:



October 5 – Pumpkin Fun Friday: Enjoy activities all about pumpkins including pumpkin bowling, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin play dough, pumpkin stories and more.

October 12 – Mad Science Lab: Join us on this special Fun Friday as we turn our Green Room into a science lab. Get hands on with slimy and spooky experiments! This event will take place from 10:00 – noon and 1:00 – 3:00.

October 19 – Mustache Day: We’ll be wearing our wildest, wackiest and weirdest mustaches, and you can join the hairy fun with mustache activities.

October 26 – Frankenstein Fun Friday: The last Friday of October is Frankenstein Friday. Make a Frankenstein Trick or treat bag to collect your treats and take a spooky walk with us.

Animal Feedings & Encounters:  Meet and greet live animal ambassador species and observe feedings while learning more about their habits and habitats.

Tuesdays , Thursdays, and Saturdays

Puppet Show:  The Unloveables – Not every animal makes a good pet. Get the story firsthand from the animals themselves.

Wednesdays, 4:00 p.m.; Fridays, 3:00 p.m.; Saturdays, 11:00 p.m.; Sundays, 2:00 p.m.

 

Nature Dome Experience:  Story time with Grandpa Tree, Charlotte’s only talking tree, featuring the program Autumn Woods.

Turtles on the Twos:  Get up close to turtles, and learn what you can do to protect this 'backyard beauty'.

Spinning Spiders and Creepy Crawlers

It’s a hauntingly good time that’s a little spooky, but not-too-scary. Enjoy Halloween treats including live animal encounters, wild story time and outdoor fun on the not-so-haunted Paw Paw Nature Trail that leads to the newly open Fort Wild.
