Farm-to-fork event deemed successful

SALISBURY, NC – Although the weather was stormy, the rain went around the 3rd annual Riot in the Pasture, Sunday, May 19 at Morgan Ridge Vineyard in eastern Rowan County. The local foods farm-to-fork dinner, hosted by Bread Riot, a non-profit for local food advocacy, drew more than 400 people. The local foods feast featured products from Rowan and surrounding counties; also available was wine from Morgan Ridge Vineyards and craft beer from Fullsteam and Top of the Hill breweries.

Entertainment was provided by returning headliner No. 9 Coal, and local favorites, The Dionne Hodges Murphy Trio and Dave Meyers Band. The delicious dinner prepared by Chef Jason Nain was a display of the abundant variety of fresh ingredients grown and produced by farmers in the area. Products for the meal were donated in part by Miss Jenny's Pickles, Boonville Flour Mill, Correll Farms, Barbee Farms, Wild Turkey Farm, Bame Farms and SandyCreek Farm. Fresh cut flowers were donated by Lee Ly and Jean McCoy.

Children romped on the grounds, painted bee boxes and delighted in found pollywogs and lawn games. Farmers and artisan producers were on-site with goods for sale from Rowan and surrounding counties. If you missed this event, plan ahead for next year’s Riot in the Pasture, Sunday, May 18th, 2014.

Up next for Bread Riot will be bulk share purchases of pork. Bread Riot is currently taking reservations for a pork bulk meat purchase from Bame Farms with distribution at the end of May, and a beef bulk purchase will occur in August. If you have the freezer space for about 25 pounds of pork or beef, reserve now at breadriot.org. You can also split a share with a friend or neighbor. Bread Riot will also be bringing back the popular Winter Harvest, a basket of locally produced food. The program runs for 20 weeks starting in November and runs through March. Like Riot in the Pasture, Bread Riot aggregates products from multiple producers for the Winter Harvest program. Shares can be reserved beginning in October.
