Mom can attend free music performances

Tuesday, May 7, 2013 — Enjoy one or two music performances on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. At 1 p.m. the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble will take the stage, and at 3 p.m. the mother-daughter duo Myrna Bascunan and Claudia Lopez Bascunan will sing Chilean folk songs, play drums and tell stories. Both performances are free, and weekend parking is free!

The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble

With saxophones, trumpets, trombones and more, this 20-member group of advanced high-school musicians will treat you to the best of big-band jazz. Hear Duke Ellington compositions, a variety of big-band music from the swing era, and some Latin jazz.

Accomplished and award-winning musician Dr. Gregg Gelb directs the talented group. In addition to working with the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble, Gelb leads his jazz quartet, eight-piece swing band, big-band, Latin jazz band and other small groups. He is founder and director of the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Society, and is co-founder and player with the N.C. Jazz Repertory Orchestra.

The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble is part of the Philharmonic Association, an organization that fosters the love of great music in young musicians.

Music of the Carolinas: Myrna Bascunan and Claudia Lopez Bascunan

Myrna Bascunan and her daughter, Claudia Lopez Bascunan, came to the United States from Chile as political refugees in 1976. They started singing together in 1995 and have been performing folk songs and sharing stories of their home country ever since. The Chilean folk songs, though influenced by music from Spain, are woven together with native touches from Mapuche or Araucanian melodies, harmonies and rhythms.

This mother-daughter duo performance is part of the museum’s Music of the Carolinas series. The May 12 performance is presented with PineCone, with support from the North Carolina Museum of History Associates, Williams Mullen, and WLHC-FM/WLQC-FM.
