Town Creek Indian Mound hosts Dog Dags Day event

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 — MOUNT GILEAD – Town Creek Indian Mound has gone to the dogs. To celebrate the end of National Dog Week, the site will host the 2nd annual “Dogs’ Day at Town Creek” on Sept. 28 for families and their four-legged companions. This all day event, with a fair atmosphere, will include dog-friendly vendors and presenters as well as fun activities for the kids.

Representatives of the Carolina Dog Rescue and Conservation Project have been invited to attend. The Carolina Dog Rescue and Conservation Project was created to protect the free-ranging Carolina Dog, a mysterious ancient dog breed. Local dog-friendly vendors include the Montgomery County Humane Society and local pet groomers.

The day’s events will kick-off at 9 a.m. with a “K-9 5K Fun Run/Dog Walk.” Runners are encouraged to bring their dogs. The race fee is $10 and registration is required. Contact towncreek@ncdcr.gov or (910) 439-6802 for a registration form. Free dog treats will be available in the museum (while supplies last) and water stations will be available for your dog’s convenience around the site.

For more than 1,000 years, American Indians farmed lands later known as North Carolina. Around A.D. 1000, a new cultural tradition arrived in the Pee Dee River Valley. Throughout Georgia, South Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and western and southern piedmont North Carolina, inhabitants built earthen mounds for their leaders, engaged in widespread trade, supported craftspeople and celebrated a new religion.

The mission of Town Creek is to interpret the history of the American Indians who once lived here. The visitor center features interpretive exhibits and audiovisual displays. A national historic landmark, Town Creek Indian Mound State Historic Site is North Carolina’s only state historic site dedicated to American Indian heritage. Tour groups are welcome and encouraged.

The site is open Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. It is closed to the public Sundays and Mondays and most major holidays.

The historic site is within the Division of State Historic Sites and is at 509 Town Creek Mound Road, Mount Gilead.
