Badin resident receives AADE Educator of the Year honor

Wednesday, August 8, 2012 — The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) has named Joanne Rinker, MS, RD, CDE, LDN, as its 2013 Educator of the Year.

Rinker, a Badin resident, coordinates diabetes self-management education for the N.C. Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP). She has been with the N.C. Division of Public Health since 2007 and is a valued member of the DPCP team.

Rinker started her career as a registered dietitian at an outpatient diabetes self-management program in Pinehurst and in 2003 became a certified diabetes educator.

In her role as the N.C. Diabetes Education Recognition Program coordinator, Rinker leads the largest American Diabetes Association recognized program in the country. She leads 38 local health departments that cover 50 counties with a total of 56 service delivery sites to increase access to care across North Carolina.

Throughout the years, she has tried to make an impact at both the state and national levels. She is a member of AADE’s local chapter in Charlotte (MADE) where she has served as secretary and more recently as the N.C. State coordinated body representative, who reports nationally to AADE on member services.

In her upcoming role as the 2013 AADE Diabetes Educator of the Year, Rinker intends to travel to all seven AADE regions of the United States to discuss the relationship between diabetes and hearing loss, a major public health concern as more than 30 percent of patients with diabetes have impaired hearing loss. Through a training she helped to develop, educators will be able to screen for hearing loss and refer to audiologists.
