Chiropractic and a healthy you

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 — Throughout the last year I wrote about the many musculoskeletal ailments people experience and how chiropractic can play a role in alleviating some of the aches and pains associated with daily living.

But chiropractic is not just about treating neck, back, arm, hip, leg, shoulder, foot, knee, elbow, wrist and headache pain.

I write and talk about the success chiropractors have in treating specific conditions like vertigo, because society relates sickness and disease with going to see a doctor.

Why should I go to the chiropractor if I am feeling fine? Why can’t I come back only when I get to feeling bad again? Why do I need maintenance care? Good questions many people ponder after completing a care plan in my office that has alleviated their initial complaint and also asked by those who have never sought chiropractic care. Health maintenance. What a foreign concept, but one chiropractor has been preaching for a hundred years. With oncoming socialized medicine, it is the new paradigm being embraced by allopathic medicine.

How you feel is not always a good indication of how healthy you are. How many times do we see people who say they “feel fine” and suddenly experience a sudden heart attack or stroke, have debilitating pain or experience a health crisis.

People lose touch with how they really feel, stop listening to their own bodies’ signs of sickness and pain and think “maybe it will go away”. The problem is that when we wait until pain ”rears its ugly head” the damage has already been done.

Chiropractic works with the spinal column, which houses and protects the spinal cord and nerves that, with the brain, comprise the “central nervous system” and control all body function.

Chiropractors perform spinal adjustments to correct disturbances (called a subluxation) in nerve function and remove interference in the central nervous system to help restore the body back to normal function and health.

A study done at the University of Lund showed that long-term chiropractic care of two or more years was shown to “re-establish a normal physiological state independent of age, sex or nutritional supplements.” These findings offer a scientific explanation for the positive health benefits reported by patients receiving chiropractic care. They also show the benefits of regular chiropractic care for health maintenance.

Don’t wait for something to go wrong before you attend to your health. A healthy spine can improve your life.

Give your family and friends the best gift of all this year, the gift of a healthy you. Make chiropractic a regular part of your health regimen and get on the road to wellness.
