Book pays tribute to heroes of Flight 93 on 9-11

Thursday, August 25, 2011 —  A book paying tribute to the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93 has been produced by The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown for release on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Titled, "Heroes Were Made," the book chronicles the flight's crash into a field near Shanksville, Pa., after the crew and passengers overpowered the plane's hijackers rather than let it reach the intended target of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

It features stories and photographs from the newspaper's decade-long coverage of the crash scene, including profiles of the 33 passengers and 7 crew members.

It also details construction of the Flight 93 National Memorial project at the scene of the crash.

The book's forward is written by Tom Ridge, the nation's first director of Homeland Security and a former Pennsylvania governor.

Other contributors include Rocky Bleier, the former Pittsburgh Steelers halfback and Vietnam veteran, who helped raise more than a half-million dollars for the memorial; and architect Paul Murdoch, who designed the memorial.

"Heroes Were Made" sells for $24.95 plus shipping and handling. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Flight 93 National Memorial project.

Orders can be placed at or at 1-866-307-0905.
