DAR honors students through ‘Preserving the Past’ contest

Thursday, January 12, 2012 — The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recognized several local students for their contest entries to the Junior American Citizens Contests offered to students from preschool-12th grade. The theme for the year was “Preserving the Past.”

National winner (first place), Southeast Division (first place) and N.C. (first place) winner is Bethany Westbrook, first grade, for her photo essay; Southeast Division (first place) and N.C. (first place) is Carson Davis, fifth grade for his photo essay; National winner (second place), South-east Division (first place) and N.C. (first place) winner is Katie Edwards, fifth grade, for her short story and also for her photo essay; and N.C. (first place) winner is Madelene Rose Davis, fourth grade, for her poster.

These students are part of the Stanly-Montgomery Home School Junior American Citizens Club and meet throughout the year at Prospect Baptist Church and are directed by Janet Westbrook. The sponsoring DAR Chapter is Clear Creek Militia.

The purpose of the Junior American Citizens Commi-ttee is to teach America’s school children, through JAC clubs and contests, the principles of democratic government and an appreciation for the United States.
