Basketball second half brings promise, challenges

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Sunday, January 4, 2009 Now that the first half of the basketball season has been completed, the teams of Stanly County look to 2009 to make their mark.

On the girls’ side, four of the county’s five teams sit atop the Rocky River Conference Standings, with North Stanly on top at 6-0.

The Comets have the longest active winning streak in Stanly County at nine games and have been outscoring the opposition by an average of 74-39.

South Stanly is second at 5-1 with Albemarle and West Stanly a 1/2 game behind at 4-1.

Both North and South may be without their leading scorers for a while, as North’s Alexis Atkins (shoulder) and South’s Chelsey Whitley (ankle) both may miss some time.

Albemarle saw their seven-game win streak end at North Stanly, but the Bulldogs have the talent to make a statement in conference play.

West Stanly finally has their full team together and looks to be much improved, having only lost in conference to Albemarle.

Gray Stone has great outside shooting and can contend with anyone.

On the boys’ side, Albemarle is just behind the Jackets at 4-1 in the conference and have won five in a row including a forfeit from West Montgomery for using ineligible players.

Tied for first place with the Bulldogs are West Stanly, who placed second in the CMC-NorthEast tournament and have winS this season over J.M. Robinson, Piedmont and Albemarle.

South Stanly is tied for third place with Monroe at 4-2 in conference.

North Stanly and Gray Stone are both talented teams that have the potential to make big runs in 2009.

This Week’s Games

South Stanly will open a three-game home stand Tuesday against Gray Stone, and will face two more conference opponents on Wednesday and Friday, West Stanly and North Stanly.

South’s Desi Brown has faced his former school on the gridiron and now will do the same on the hardwood Friday night.

Friday night will also have two other Stanly schools at home, with West Stanly hosting Union Academy and Albemarle at home against Mount Pleasant.

North Stanly’s girls face a threat to their winning streak Tuesday at home against West Stanly. The Colts handled the pressure defense of J.M. Robinson well this past week, and will face pressure defense against the Comets.

A battle for the conference lead will ensue Wednesday night when Albemarle travels to Forest Hills.

The showdown in the paint between centers Denico Autry and Mark Clyburn should be tremendous.

Clyburn had 16 rebounds and five blocks in Forest Hills’ win in the CMC-Union title game.
