S. Stanly rallies late over North

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Sunday, January 11, 2009 The South Stanly boys basketball team has shown a flair for the dramatic in the 2008-09 season, with several late rallies, come-from-behind victories and overtime wins as well.

In conference play this season, the Bulls have not won a game by more than 14 points, and five of their conference wins have come by seven points or less.

On Friday night, South Stanly would rally in the fourth quarter with some big defensive stops and would move up to second place in the conference with a 55-50 win over North Stanly.

Desi Brown posted a double-double for the Rebel Bulls (9-2, 7-2 RRC) with 12 points and 11 assists, while guard D’Marius Allen added 10. points.

Daryl Davis came off the bench for South Stanly to add seven points and seven rebounds.

Alex Russell led North Stanly (5-9, 3-6 RRC) and all scorers with 14 points. Chris Edwards had 13 for the Comets.

The two teams would exchange leads and ties in the first quarter as a Robert Thompson fadeaway jumper with 1:06 left in the period tied the game at 12-12.

North Stanly would open up the second quarter on a 15-5 run over the first 3:54 of the period, highlighted by a sensational Antwon Benson reverse layup.

Russell scored half of his overall points in the first half, opening the Comet run with a big three-point play.

Donovan Smith countered for the Bulls with a three-point play of his own that helped South to narrow the gap to just two points with 1:24 left in the first half.

Brown’s bucket with 4:05 left in the third period cut the Comet lead down to one point at 37-36.

North Stanly’s Benson would get into foul trouble in the third period, picking up his fourth foul with 1:37 left in the third.

His scoring presence was missed on the court as North would only score three points over the next five minutes as South would retake the lead in the fourth quarter.

A Davis basket with 4:46 left in the final quarter gave South Stanly the lead for good.

The Comets struggled to hit shots in the final period, only getting two made baskets from the floor and shooting 3-of-11 from the free-throw line.

“North played exremely well tonight and were just trying to hang on in the first half,” South head coach Sean Whitley said.

“West [Stanly] took it out of us a little bit on Wednesday, but we found a way to win, which is what we’ve been doing all year.”

Whitley talked about his team’s rebounding, including the play of Daryl Davis.

“Rebounding won us this game tonight. Daryl gave us a spark on defense and it really picked us up tonight,” Whitley said.

Both teams will be at home Friday night as South Stanly hosts Albemarle and North will be at home against Union Academy.
