One day after pitching South Stanly to a 1-0 win in the first round of the 1A State Playoffs, Nikki Whitley joined her softball teammates, sister Chelsey, and Kodi Smith on the stage at South Stanly in a dress rehearsal of “CATS.”
The production features the 28 members of Patti Smith’s dance class and is one of the better productions I’ve had the opportunity to see. The cast of dancers are incredible and who doesn’t love that all-time great melody, “Memory.”
But before the production takes to the stage for real on May 22, there are more memories to be made on the softball diamond for the Whitley sisters and Smith. They’re at home to West Wilkes tomorrow night and they’ll have their growling game faces on, not their smiling cat faces.
• Albemarle is making some noise in the 1A State Playoffs and got over a big hurdle on Tuesday night by beating West Wilkes, a team that had ended their seasons the past two years.
Leading the offense was freshman Corey Dick, a brawny third baseman who certainly doesn’t play like a rookie. He’s a big powerful left-handed hitter and has left the yard in each of the last two games.
With Dick, Alex Robichaud and John McClure batting 2-3-4, the trio of left-handed bats are a potent assignment to get past for any right-hander.
With the team gaining confidence with every win, they’ll look to McClure to continue the outstanding lefty pitching that Robichaud exhibited in shutting out West Wilkes, 11-0.
McClure has thrown some excellent games this season and can be expected to throw another Friday night.
n Saturday, a number of runners and field event people from South Stanly and Albemarle will be competing in the 1A State Meet at NC A&T.
On the women’s side, South’s Jade Farlow will look to bring gold home in her last meet as a Lady Bull. Her career had been one of dedication and excellence and nothing would be more justified than her accomplishing her goals.
AHS’s Shay Covington will also be looking for gold in the triple jump, something she accomplished as a sophomore two years ago, and with her sprint relay teammates.
South’s Caitlin Ritchie will be defending her gold in the pole vault and will be challenged by teammate Jasmine Patterson.
On the men’s side, South Cordiares Brewer will be competing in three events - pole vault, long jump and triple jump while his teammate Sean Kluttz will be running for gold in the 800 meter.
