Stanly County youth excel at state meet

— On May 17, and June 14, the Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department offered the nationally recognized Hershey’s Track and Field local and district meets for the seventh consecutive year.
This program has been considered one of the best in the region, earning statewide recognition for its exceptional number of participants, volunteers, and programming.
Athletes from Albemarle and Stanly County, Huntersville, High Point and Cornelius in the 9-14 age group participated in this year’s program.
“We had excellent numbers this year and everyone had a great time. Our volunteers were outstanding, and the weather was cooperative,” Department Athletic Director, Brian Hinson said.
Participants who placed first or second in their event at the district meet advanced to the state meet on June 27 at Cary Academy Stadium. Albemarle had an impressive performance and left the event with several state championships won.
In a time of 1:14.05, the 9-10 year old girls’ 4x100 relay team of Aleena Jordan, Caitlin Hall, Merica Simpson, and Megan Frick won gold.
Jesse Davis won gold in the 13-14 boys’ 1600 meter with a time of 5:37:01.
In the 13-14 boys’ long jump, Zach Almond took gold with a jump of 8’11.5’’. Almond also qualified for the North American Finals in Hershey, Penn.. He was one of only five participants in the region to earn this honor.
The parks and recreation department would like to thank its volunteers for another year and another great job: Carol Gibson, Myron and Andrea Harrington, Paulette and Lauren Hinson, Dakota Burris, Mike Blanton, Roge Brafford, Eddie Throneburg, and the Albemarle Fire Department. A special thanks to all the participants and parents for attending and showing such good sportsmanship.
